Singin’ in the Rain is coming to The ArtscapeDecember 4, 2015 / bynatalie / Categories : Personal
Singin’ in the Rain, mega hit production, direct from London’s West End, will be produced and presented in South Africa by Pieter Toerien at the Artscape Opera House from 11 December 2015 to 10 January 2016.
Singin’ in the Rain made a big splash (you can have that pun for free) the moment it premiered in the UK. The show’s touring internationally at the moment with a stellar South African cast. They’ve been playing to sell out houses in Hong Kong, New Zealand, the Philippines and Singapore – and South Africa is next, coming to Cape Town and Johannesburg.
Set in 1927, Singin’ in the Rain (made famous by Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds in the iconic 1952 MGM movie) is a brilliant comedy about the film industry, with its egomaniacal stars, monstrous film moguls, fickle fans, classic ‘golden-era’ moves and slapstick humour.
There’s a scene in the show where it rains live onstage – one of the big highlights of the show, leaving audiences in the front rows a little wetter than when they first arrived. Whilst a little water is splashed into the first three rows of the auditorium (known as the Splash Zone), most of the water is drained back into holding tanks, filtered through sand and UV light, and recycled for the next performance.
Musical theatre star Bethany Dickson, who hails from Cape Town, stars as the aspiring actress Kathy Selden, opposite Grant Almirall who makes his debut as the charming Don Lockwood. The cast of 27 includes Steven van Wyk as Cosmo Brown, Taryn-Lee Hudson as Lina Lamont, James Borthwick as RF Simpson, Mark Richardson as Roscoe Dexter and Anne Power as Dora.
Singin’ in the Rain is at the Artscape Opera House in Cape Town from 11 December 2015 to 10 January 2016. Performances are Tuesdays to Fridays at 7:30pm, Saturdays at 2:30pm and 7:30pm and Sundays at 1:30pm and 6:30pm. There is one 5:00pm show on Sunday 13 December.
Buy your tickets, from R100 via Computicket on 08619158000 or the Artscape box office on 0214217695. Block bookings of 20 or more qualify for a discount. For further queries email firstname.lastname@example.org.
(Please note, the first 3 rows of the stalls (A – C) are designated as the “splash zone” where there is a strong chance of a shower during the show’s big number. To avoid getting wet, please do not select seats in these rows.)
