I don’t have much longer to sleep comfortably on the floor 🤰so it was now or never and I’m so glad we chose now! The keys to our comfort and success were: 1 night is enough nights, no further than a 2 hour drive from home, camp site with ablution facilities (NB) and a restaurant 🗝️ ⛺️ Oh, and extremely low expectations!

August likes: Toy cars! And if there’s no toy car around to push across the floor, he’ll use a plastic bowl or his hairbrush or whatever else he can find. He also likes being in the swimming pool, impressing his mom and dad by “standing” for a couple of seconds a time, climbing anything in sight (!), mango, Netflix the cat and demanding five bottles during the night.

August does not like: Birds in general, but especially Hadedas, which send him speed-crawling into our arms if he so much as hears one screeching outside. Being confined to his car seat (and will wail and wail until one of us caves and pulls over to take him out), sleeping past 6:30am (bearing in mind that “sleeping” is a loose term), being told not to eat the cat food and when the neighbour’s Guinea pig won’t let him hold it in a death grip.

Daydreaming about our 2022 babymoon at the incredible @paradisecovehotel in Mauritius before August came 💙 Paradise Cove is a honeymoon hotel and they make such a huge effort to make every moment romantic. The property is beautiful beyond, the food is amazing, mocktails sensational, romantic dinners like a movie - it’s probably the most romantic time we’ve ever had. Absolutely recommend ❤️

Uber is affordable and easy to use, but to maximise efficiency I would book a driver for the whole day, who can meet you at the airport, handle transfers all day and get you back to the airport without a hiccup

I truly never imagined I’d fall pregnant with baby number 2 when baby number 1 was only 6 months old, but the more I think about how sweet life is going to be with two babies the more excited I get.

I mean obviously I’m terrified and I anticipate the next 2-4 years being the most challenging of my life, but that goes without saying.

Surviving the 1st trimester with a baby who needs me has been *wildly* different to surviving the 1st trimester the first time round. Thankfully my symptoms have been so mild compared to my first pregnancy!

Mostly I’ve just been really tired (like, “am I dying?”) and feeling nauseous if I don’t eat. While I craved sugar when I was pregnant with Aug and could literally not even walk down the veggie aisle in the grocery store, I’ve been more interested savoury foods this time and actually able to ingest some healthy foods.

I’m literally *living* for that 2nd trimester energy and glow to kick in right now 🙏 and making the absolute most of having my first baby as my only baby while I still can.

Why didn’t you use birth control if you didn’t want 2 kids this close together? - It’s not that we don’t want to be pregnant, we’re just SURPRISED

Why would he scroll through your phone? - Because he wants to see more pictures

Does he not know about how babies are made? / Why is he acting like he wasn’t there for the making of the baby? - He’s JUST SURPRISED. You can have sex and then still be surprised to find out it has resulted in the highly unlikely and incredibly beautiful miracle of life

Did you know that there’s no McDonald’s in Kenya? In fact, there are only 4 countries with McDonald’s in all of Africa: South Africa, Egypt, Mauritania (wild card!) and Morocco.

I’m not paid to eat @mcdonalds_za, but I wish I could be.

Every visit to SA starts off with a drive-by to pick up either a sausage & egg McMuffin meal (how is their orange juice the best orange juice?) or a double cheeseburger meal with extra mayo (which for some reason they call chicken sauce) and lettuce because those are the superior items on the menu. Coke Zero non-negotiable.

And I’ll be honest, there are a few more visits before I head back to Kenya.

Now I will not hear a word of McD’s slander - it IS real food, it DOESN’T taste like cardboard and it DOES contain South African beef.

We just got home after 2 days in hospital where Augie had mountains of tests done to try find a diagnosis for his ongoing tummy issues. Keenan is travelling for work and having no family around to come visit us, relieve me for an hour or two or just bring comfort has actually been harder than I thought it would be.

Having the support of our nanny Ann, who has been with us since Augie was born, has me in tears of gratitude this morning. She’s the one who came to relieve me at the hospital, and is staying with me while my husband is away.

We weren’t meant to raise babies all alone. And to be honest we aren’t. Ann has been the person to come with me to Augie’s first round of vaccinations, to see me through every one of his leaps and regressions, to tell me “let him play on the bed for a while” when he won’t nap, or “you messed up” when I skip a day of trying to introduce him to solids because I’ve been busy.

Feeling so emotional and grateful for nanny Ann and her love today.
