A couple of weeks ago, I asked the great people of Twitter:
Tell me people of Cape Town, where do you go for the perfect steak?
— Natalie Roos (@NatalieRoos) February 5, 2015
I received loads of replies, and I realised that steak is one of those things people feel really strongly about. Especially South Africans. We all have our favourite place to go for a good old steak dinner. It’s the South African comfort food.
The top 5 replies I saw over and over:
1. The Butcher Shop (review below)
2. HQ (I agree on the food but the service is terrible)
3. The Local Grill, Woodstock (haven’t tried it yet)
4. Nelson’s Eye (next on my hit-list)
5. Cafe Dijon (totally agree!)
Lucky for me, I was invited to Butcher Shop in Mouille Point for a steak dinner. On an evening with one of the most perfect sunsets of the year so far, we sat at a window seat with a view of the lighthouse.
We ordered a bottle of Pinot Noir and I had the fillet steak, with a bernaise sauce and asparagus with benaise sauce too. I can honestly say that the steak was perfect. Exactly how I like it: seared on the outside, pink but warmed through on the inside. I think its the best steak I’ve ever had.
The wine selection is massive so I was in my element. The Vriesenhof Pinot Noir we ordered was the middle of the range Pinot on the menu – not the cheapest, but not the most expensive. It was delicious and I’ll definitely be ordering it the next time I see it on a menu.
