We all know that self-care doesn’t just mean face masks and luxury candles. Self-care can mean working out, seeing your therapist, prioritising time with your friends, or setting a strict boundary between work-time and home-time. But for me personally, a day at the spa really does feel like self-care. I love being touched and the Leo in me absolutely lives for pampering, so the opportunity to have someone taking care of me all day is my dream way to relax.
Experiencing My Thai Wellness Spa
Tucked away in De Waterkant, right in the heart of bustling Cape Town is a little haven of calm and quiet, where you’ll find soft mood lighting, exotic scents in the air, a warm welcome and a blissful little courtyard hidden in the back. My Thai Wellness Spa is inspired by the traditional wellness massage rituals and botanical recipes from both Thailand and Africa and it is one of Cape Town’s best kept secrets.
Their spa menu includes both Thai massage treatments and aromatherapy treatments as well as facials, nail treatments and waxing, but what really appealed to me is the selection of Spa Packages. Keenan and I chose the True Indulgence package, which includes a full body scrub, full body massage, QMS facial, manicure and pedicure.
When I book a spa treatment, it’s extremely important to me to know that the therapists are using top quality skincare products. In fact, I won’t book a facial unless I know the spa uses skincare products I trust, like QMS Medicosmetics, which I have been a fan of for years.
The energy at My Thai is extremely relaxing, and therapists never raise their voices above a whisper. From start to finish, the whole experience is just very calm. After a cup of organic Tichaa tea we selected our favourite aromatherapy oil in a blind smell test (I chose Oriental Rose from Harnn) and settled in for a day of relaxation. The treatment rooms, which are named after cities in Thailand, are warm and dimly lit, like a little cocoon. The smells and experiences are ones I want to take home, so I may look up on some of the best reed diffusers and see which one would be good to use if I wanted to buy my own Oriental Rose and relive the memory. I could at least pretend I was back in the spa for part of the day in the comfort of my own bedroom. I’m sure sites like browse AromaTech have some scent options similar to the ones I smelt here if I can’t find that delightful rose scent.
During our 5-hour couples treatment, I never felt pressured into making conversation, since my therapist Sumatra had me wrapped up in a blanket with my eyes covered by a weighted eye mask. It sure is a lot different to normal eye masks that’s for sure, I might look up one of those too. At this rate I’ll be buying the entire spa!Between the body scrub and massage I had a quick shower, where the Harnn products had been changed out to my selection of Oriental Rose. It’s these kinds of small details that set a spa apart from the rest. We had a small snack of lemon water, roasted nuts and candied ginger in the courtyard before being tucked up again for the facial and manicure and pedicure treatments. By the end of my day of pampering I was starving and very ready to tuck into the delicious Thai lunch that was waiting in the courtyard.
I absolutely loved our treatments at My Thai and I’ll definitely be back. I particularly like the look of the Journey Into the Jasmine Night and the Asian Blend Signature Herbal Compress Massage. The spa has a cult clientele, and I am very keen to join them.
