Vergenoegd Löw The Wine Estate is pretty perfectly positioned between the mountains and the ocean. Just off Baden Powell Drive, about half an hour from Cape Town, the estate is blessed with diverse soil, a cool sea breeze and lots of sunshine. Famous for their super-cute duck parade, Vergenoegd’s winemaker wanted to bring something new and unique to the market. Normally when I think of Merlot I imagine a deep, plummy red wine, smooth and delicious, perfect for a wintry night. Which is why the Adam & Eve Merlot is so interesting. Using the exact same grape but two entirely different winemaking processes, Vergenoegd’s Adam & Eve Merlot tells the story of two as one and one as two.
Adam is a light red. Still bold and bursting with flavours of soft, ripe plum and red berries – this wine is a light, summer version of your classic Merlot. It’s young, fresh and easy-drinking – a modern take on a traditional Merlot.
Eve is the estates innovative white Merlot. Light, with gentle tropical fruits notes and subtle hints of citrus and lemon zest. It’s not as dry as a Sauvignon Blanc, not as rich and creamy as a Chardonnay – the only way I can describe it is what it is, a white Merlot.
