My ankles are huge. HUGE. I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s like my calves just melted all the way down my legs and pooled around my ankle bones. I guess that’s what 33 hours of flying will do to you.
On that note, happy 2016 everyone! I hope you all had a great festive season and holiday and you’re ready to get going on another year. If you’re not ready, it’s too late now so just go with it. I got to spend it all with my family, which was the living best. We woke up early on Christmas morning to unwrap presents and it felt like being a kid again.
I didn’t make any New Year’s Resolutions because, much like getting your partner’s name tattooed on your body, it’s a tried and tested way to curse your best efforts. Instead, I’m really just trying to be more zen. I don’t want to be as tired or as stressed as I was last year. I want to sleep well, eat well and spend more time at home, hosting my friends. I want to work smartly and know when to say no.
I just spent a couple of weeks in Melbourne with my family and I have to say, I’m in love with the city. Imagine Cape Town, but where everything works properly – all the time. It’s a foodie dream and we ate more than I would ever be willing to tell my trainer about. Every meal we had was incredible and let me tell you, Melbourne’s reputation as a coffee capital is well-deserved.
We went all out, ignoring the plummeting Rand as we ordered R80 coffees and R200 bowls of muesli. It’s no good converting while you’re travelling, unless you want to have a terrible time crying into your R120 beer. We hit up some of Melbourne’s hotspots and no one even minded that I dragged them around to far-flung brunch spots and inner-city coffee shops because honestly, it was all so delicious.
Melbourne had never been on my travel bucket list and I ended up going because that’s where my little sister moved to. But the universe works in mysterious ways because the city has shot up my list of all-time favourite destinations. It’s beautiful, diverse, delicious and easy to get around. There are beautiful beaches and winelands within a day-trip drive and did I mention that it’s delicious?
I’ve got a lot to share with you over the next few weeks, but for now, I leave you with the newest member of our family. Meet Netflix.
