This past weekend I was hosting a new friend visiting Cape Town from Germany. Since showing people around and meeting new friends are two of my favourite activities (not to mention eating and drinking), I loved having the opportunity to show off Cape Town food, wine and hospitality.
It was Anika’s birthday on Sunday, and we headed out to Spier Wine Farm in Stellenbosch for a little Sunday celebration.
It was the perfect sunny Sunday and we got to try the new Spring tasting menu, which was such a treat! Four wines, paired with four delicious and unique canapes, served in a bed of real grass!
Of course we started with a glass of bubbly. And ended with a glass of bubbly next to the dam.
Celebrate Spring at Spier’s Tasting Room with an array of canapés made from locally sourced ingredients.
The Signature Chardonnay / Pinot Noir is accompanied by a pomegranate and lime sorbet cupped in a fresh strawberry.
The Spier 21 Gables Sauvignon Blanc finds its match with a Franschhoek smoked trout cannelloni and creamy trout pâté, with hints of fresh lemon and fine herbs.
The Ideology Cinsaut / Mourvedre / Shiraz / Viognier is paired with a thyme dusted almond macaron containing chicken liver pâté infused with the same wine.
Rounding off the tasting is the Spier Creative Block 5 bordeaux-style blend, which is served with a lightly-smoked cherry-filled bitter chocolate with a pistachio nut crust.
The tasting is available from R100 per person.
Spier is open for tastings and sales from Monday – Saturday 9:00 – 17:00 and from 11:00 – 18:00 on Sundays.
